Official Site: Star Wars Blasters: So Uncivilised, But So Awesome

Tim Veekhoven brings us another fantastically researched article, looking at the various blasters used across the various Star wars films and shows over at StarWars.com.

Throughout the centuries, blasters evolved into a myriad of models and sizes with specific functions. Powerful mega corporations such as BlasTech Industries, Merr-Sonn Munitions Inc., SoroSuub Corporation, and Czerka Arms were the most successful weapons manufacturers. Blaster pistols could be used with one hand and were easy to carry on a belt or in a holster. The difference between a blaster pistol and a heavy blaster pistol (such as Solo’s DL-44) was that the latter models were heavier to use and delivered more powerful blasts, albeit with a shorter maximum range. A generic blaster pistol weighed about 500 kilograms, could deliver 100 shots per pack, and had a maximum range of 120 meters. In this article we’ll check out some better-known blaster pistol models (don’t expect any hold-out blasters, sporting blasters, heavy blaster pistols, or blaster rifles).

Jedi News Review: Star Wars Rebels: Rebel Resolve

Jedi News Review: Star Wars Rebels: Rebel Resolve

In what feels like the second act of a three-part season finale, our rebels attempt to rescue Kanan against the orders of Hera and ultimately the mysterious Fulcrum. Who better to put their faith in than the always even-keeled astromech Chopper. This one should be fun.

Story/Plot

Aaron:Last episode left us hanging, wondering about the fate of Kanan after he was captured by the Imperials. This episode starts out with the team trying to gather data which they hope will lead to his location. The computer inside an AT-DP walker might not be the most logical place to start looking, but it sure makes for a fun action scene. This opening sequence brought back memories of Return of the Jedi with Zeb playing the role of Chewbacca and Ezra the Ewok as they took control of the Imperial vehicle.

Fulcrum makes another appearance and this time we get more than the voice. We get to see an actual hologram of the character.. or maybe someone posing as them. This time the voice sounded very female. I didn’t go back and listen to the previous time we heard the voice but this time it sounded distinctly different to me. The popular opinion is that Fulcrum is Ahsoka and I tend to agree. If that is the case they are definitely trying to throw us off with that hologram because I don’t see how her headtails would fit so nicely under that hood.
Teresa: This particular episode opened up very weakly for me. I personally did not enjoy the AT-DP walker scene and it just gave the episode a slow feel. However, in this scene we see true concern, care and dedication by our grumpy little droid. This was the first time that I can remember seeing him strongly dedicated to his crew and team. The story for this episode centers around Ezra being convinced Kanan is alive and not resting until he finds him. The interesting thing to me is we see Ezra acting in a very non-jedi way where in a cool twist we see Hera acting very much as a Jedi would. What do I mean by this? Well let me explain.

The Jedi are supposed to not have attachments and they are trained to put the mission and objectives first. This is what Hera does even though you can tell her heart wants to do something else. She instead heeds the mysterious Fulcrum’s advice and does as she is asked to do…or told.

Overall as the story continues we get to see a little defiance as the crew because I truly believe they see each other as more than just a crew, there is a family there. It will be interesting to see what the crew chooses to do as we head into the season finale.

Characters

Aaron: This was a big episode for Ezra because it showed a glimpse into how he can handle himself without Kanan. He was upset that his master was captured but he didn’t let it defeat him. He was determined to rescue Kanan even if it meant directly disobeying Hera. Ezra acted with confidence and was the one to come up with the plan that ultimately located Kanan. Of course he had some major help from Chopper.

Oh Chopper. That droid is straight up crazy. He always seems to steal the scenes he is in, but this episode was the standout episode for him this season. I think it might be the more human tone to his vocalizations or the fact that he has two arms to gesture with, but Chopper conveys much more emotion than other non-verbal droids in Star Wars. I dare say even more than R2-D2. You could really feel sadness from him this episode and a determination to save Kanan.

Teresa: This episode for me fell a little flat for all of the characters except Hera and Chopper. We got to see another side to Hera one that was dealing with an inner struggle. I think she is strong and knows what needs to be done for the missions however, I don’t think she ever thought she would lose Kanan. I do think however that we get to see the true level of her feelings for Kanan at this time. I point this out simply because of all my friends that are convinced Kera is a thing. I personally believe there is a deep connection between the two and we get to see that in Hera’s sadness but she is also practical and I think she truly trusts Kanan’s decision. I also think Kanan knows Hera will not sacrifice everything to come and get him. These two have one of the most grown up and mature relationships that I have ever seen in Star Wars and on a cartoon in general…maybe even on TV.

Chopper was definitely the standout in this episode but when does he not steal the show? He had some very human reactions and I swear his dialogue is beginning to sound like he is actually talking. Aaron makes a good point that Chopper shows emotions more than any other droid we have seen and yes that does mean even more than R2 ( I still love you buddy!). There are a few lines that Chopper has in this episode that you can feel his sadness, his excitement and his confidence simply by the sounds he emits, and it is very clear he is saying certain words. I am loving his growth but now I really want his backstory!.

Outstanding Moments

Aaron: The secret is out. One of the key moments in this episode is the revelation that Kanan and Ezra are Jedi. We already knew. The crew already knew, but this is the first time a member of the crew has shared the information with someone on the outside. I really liked this scene. Ezra took a chance and it paid off. It will be interesting to see if this decision ends up having some negative consequences in the future.

As usual Chopper steals the show. We got to see him not only fly but also rocket boost through space. At the end of the episode we get a scene where the crew decides to keep the data droid which Zeb has grown fond of. Chopper wasn’t having any of that and kicks the poor droid out of the open bay door. I had a moment of shock that he did it, but Zeb summed it up nicely by saying, “We should have seen that coming.” I was relieved to see the droid survived the fall and met some new friends.

Teresa: For me all the outstanding moments had to do with Chopper. Well there was also one scene with Kanan but overall Chopper was my favorite. Chopper can fly first of all and he has an amazing thruster and superb control over his flight abilities. When he rockets through space singing was one of the best moments in the entire series so far. We get to see Lothcats again and very much like Tonka and Razor from TMNT 2 secret of the ooze they go very “mama” on the poor imperial droid that lands in their midst. I think they will adopt him and call him their squishie.

Kanan has a wonderful scene where he is being tortured and he simply does not budge and you can tell this resilience is beginning to disturb Governor Tarkin. Why else would he want to take him to Mustafar?

Favorite Quotes

Aaron:

  • “I can’t guarantee that.” – Vizago
“That’s pretty typical for you.” – Ezra
  • “I’m starting to like you much better than our regular droid.” – Zeb
  • “I’m proud of you. You stepped up and took the lead. Kanan has taught you well.” – Hera
    “So have you.” – Ezra

Teresa:

  • “If you are caught, if Ezra is caught, that hope will die.” – Fulcrum
  • “Were they orders or more like her opinion?” – Sabine
  • “I see…I see…you…growing more and more frustrated.” – Kanan

Next week we will get the season finale and for the first time this season everyone will have to wait to watch it together when it airs Monday March 2nd. I think we can expect the reveal of Fulcrum as well as some surprises. We do know that Darth Vader will be appearing in this episode and we also know that Bail Organa will return in the season finale.

Do you think we should find out who Fulcrum is or should we have to wait a while? Who do you think Fulcrum is? Let us know your thoughts on any of our reviews by emailing us at starwarsbookworms@gmail.com.

Heir To The Jedi Excerpt

Heir To The Jedi Excerpt

It lands on 3rd March, it’s by Kevin Hearne and here’s an excerpt from the 1st person perspective novel via the always excellent Star Wars Books.

When I’d first felt the Force on the Millennium Falcon, it had been the barest tickle of a presence in my consciousness and in the air around me that wasn’t attributable to my five senses. Since then I had reached out to the Force on numerous occasions, and each time it grew marginally easier to make that contact and feel the Force swirl and coalesce around me, a not-quite-tangible but very real sensation, sort of like exercising and discovering over time that the same routine requires less effort because your strength and endurance have increased.
I didn’t have any goal in mind other than increasing my awareness of the Force; there were no vegetables or other objects to nudge around in the cockpit, anyway, and I figured a greater grasp of the Force would help me perform such tasks more quickly later on, and perhaps allow me to move larger objects, or accomplish any number of other Jedi exercises.
The streaming starlines of hyperspace were excellent for clearing my mind. No distractions, just visual white noise. I remembered training with the remote, wearing a helmet with the blast shield down and feeling the Force as a power within and without that worked with me and yet was not me. That had been a twinge, a tiny awakening of a new part of my mind, like a half-glimpsed dawn through sleep-encrusted eyes. I knew I wasn’t fully awake yet; I think part of me wanted to go back to sleep. But the dawn comes whether you sleep through it or not, and I think the Force might be like that—always there, but unseen until you make the effort.
My breathing slowed and deepened, and soon I became aware that there were others breathing on the ship. Drusil was nearest, sitting in an attitude of prayer or perhaps meditation like myself, attempting to soothe away her worries. Perhaps the activity of her mind was pure math. Farther back and to the left, Nakari felt happy, though I didn’t know about what. Her breath was uneven and sort of purred—was she humming to herself? I couldn’t hear that to confirm…

Official Site: The Modal Nodes vs Max Rebo Band

Official Site: The Modal Nodes vs Max Rebo Band

It’s time for the battle of the bands, brought to you by Amy Ratclife and StarWars.com.

We saw both groups in action on Tatooine in the original trilogy. They played their tunes in rough and tumble locales on the dusty Outer Rim planet — either the pay must have been stellar or they were desperate for gigs. Max Rebo reportedly worked for free food, and Jabba the Hutt’s promise of endless edibles was enough for the leader to sign a lifelong contract with the gangster. I don’t really blame him. Though the bands did compete for contracts from time to time, this breakdown isn’t about which band rocks more. It would be impossible to choose. This is an overview of members, instruments, and more from canon and Legends.

Update On Rancho Obi-Wan 2015 Membership Kits & Exclusive Celebration Anaheim Patch

Update On Rancho Obi-Wan 2015 Membership Kits & Exclusive Celebration Anaheim Patch

Rancho Obi-Wan has released product and shipping information on their upcoming 2015 Membership Kits earlier today. Check out the details below.

The Rancho Obi-Wan 2015 Membership Kit is in its final stages of production and will start shipping soon to new members and current members as they renew.

This year’s patch and membership card art are based on a painting by the talented Daniel Bergren, which was done expressly for Rancho Obi-Wan for a fundraising auction. In addition to the patch and hand-signed membership card, the kit contains a letter from Rancho chairman Steve Sansweet and the second in a series of costume designer John Mollo’s historic sketches that led to the final costume worn by Alec Guinness in Star Wars.

The Mollo sketch in this year’s kits is dated January 8, 1976, just a short time after Mollo had been hired. As the description on the back of the collectible card notes, the artist had changed the costume’s look from that of a more military-style outfit to a full length kimono-style robe with sash. The Japanese word for a kimono sash is obi. Mollo won an Academy Award for his work on the film.

They also revealed an image of their exclusive and highly-collectible Celebration Anaheim 2015 patch!

In addition to the 2015 patch, as has become tradition, Rancho Obi-Wan will offer an exclusive Celebration Anaheim patch for sale to members only. The patch is based on a beautiful black and white pencil sketch of Obi-Wan by gifted artist Keven Reinke, also done specifically for a Rancho fundraiser. Both patches were designed by Curt Hanks. The Celebration patch will be included in the price of new membership kits purchased and personalized at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim April 16-19 at the Rancho Obi-Wan booth. They also will be available for sale to existing members. The Celebration patches are limited and will not be remade.

Oscar Isaac “In The Dark” On The Force Awakens Story

Oscar Isaac “In The Dark” On The Force Awakens Story

With principal photography for Episode VII having been completed for several months now, new cast member Oscar Isaac was asked in an interview recently conducted with TimeOut Dubai if he knew the overall storyline of The Force Awakens that will be playing out on the silver screen for scores of eager fans come December 18. His response? Check it out below.

You’ve finished shooting Star Wars. Are you one of the handful of people in the world who knows what the film is about?

No. I’m just as in the dark as everyone else as to how it will all come together. But I do know it will come together beautifully. [Director] J.J. Abrams has so much passion and love for the story. I can’t wait to see more of it. That trailer was incredible. Just like the rest of the world I was floored by it.

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy Announces John Williams’ Return to Star Wars

Event Highlights a First Look at the Upcoming Star Wars Rebels Animated Series

ESSEN, GERMANY – Star Wars Celebration Europe – the official Star Wars fan convention – has come to a successful close, with more than 20,000 attendees from 40 different countries. Throughout the weekend, fans and families met their favorite stars from the films, gained exclusive access to the Saga’s creators, and learned first-hand exciting new developments in a galaxy far, far away.

In a Main Stage event hosted by Warwick Davis, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy announced that legendary composer John Williams will return to score the highly-anticipated Star Wars: Episode VII, to be directed by J.J. Abrams. And one of the Executive Producers from Star Wars Rebels, Dave Filoni, was on hand to guide fans through the genesis of the upcoming animated series, revealing designs heavily influenced by original Star Wars concept artist Ralph McQuarrie. While unable to attend in person, Executive Producers Simon Kinberg and Greg Weisman shared their excitement for the series in a video message recorded exclusively for Celebration attendees. Star Wars: Episode VII is slated for a 2015 release and Star Wars Rebels will begin airing on Disney XD starting in fall of 2014.

“This has been a remarkable event,” said Kennedy. “Star Wars fans are amazing the world over – a community that speaks in all languages, but with one voice. They are an integral part of why Star Wars continues to remain so relevant after all these years, from generation to generation. The passion of our fans is a constant consideration in all of our ongoing creative conversations. It’s for the fans that we’re telling these new stories, and because of them that we’re able to do so.”

The Emmy® Award-winning series Star Wars: The Clone Wars was also featured at the event, spotlighting a first look at The Complete Season Five Blu-ray and DVD boxed sets, and the massive Seasons 1-5 Collector’s Edition, both scheduled for an October 15 release.

At the closing ceremonies, Lucasfilm announced that its next fan fest – Star Wars Celebration VII – will be timed to the theatrical release of Episode VII, and will be held in Anaheim, California from April 16-18, 2015.

Star Wars Celebrations are official conventions organized by Lucasfilm Ltd. and ReedPOP group, multi-day events held in different locales around the world for Star Wars fans to celebrate.
